The Austrian Blockchain Center was founded by 5 Austrian top universities and is one of the key players for a competitive ecosystem. Our researchers and experts support you from the concretization of a first idea, the execution of a feasibility study to the prototype.

We aim to make Austria a centre of excellence in DLT, be the leading industry voice for blockchain advocacy, collaboration and convergence, establish a world-class DLT ecosystem by working in strategic collaboration with all stakeholders in the blockchain space, advancing best practices and standards and bridge the gap between blockchain industry and academia.

Who we are

The Austrian Blockchain Center, founded in 2019, solves problems in the field of blockchain and related technologies in an interdisciplinary setting. Our vision is to be a top one-stop-shop research center for our area and to offer all R&D services necessary for the successful implementation of DLT-based projects - from technical expertise to business management and legal research – all from a single source. Our large network of scientific partners, with 5 renowned universities as owners, allows us to cover this broad area with the necessary expertise.

We have also succeeded in establishing the ABC as a leading blockchain research network that helps blockchain projects to succeed and provide and promote the basis for further cooperation. To complement this networking function, we also established successful events, such as the center's annual conference, in recent years.

Austrian Blockchain Center – we are a COMET competence center.

As a COMET competence centre, the Austrian Blockchain Center fulfils an important role in strengthening Austria as a business location and makes it more attractive for new companies to locate and start up.

COMET Competence Centers carry out application-oriented cutting-edge research at the highest level. They conduct research in those areas that are strategically important for the Austrian economy and develop solutions for the key issues of the future such as climate protection, digitization, mobility and health.

COMET Competence Centers are funded by the Republic of Austria.Their research activities follow a plan jointly defined by science and industry. Program management is carried out by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).

Areas of Expertise

Our interdisciplinary approach allows us to answer research questions in a holistic way from technical to legal questions. Together with our partners and our team of specialists, we have accumulated relevant years of experience and expertise in different areas of knowledge.

Technology, Security and Development

Addresses the technical and theoretical foundations of distributed ledger technology. The area will also address technical aspects of different types of Blockchains and “Non Blockchains”, Smart Contracts and transparency on the Blockchain.

Business
Applications

Addresses new business models, economic potentials and problems. The area will study economic questions that arise in any peer-to-peer system and investigate DLT based decentralized business models in specific application domains.

Economic Systems and Token Engineering

Focuses on the technological aspects of Blockchains in Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things. The convergence of Blockchain with emerging technologies in those fields will be at the center of the activities.

Law and Legal Policies

Aims to address legal questions arising under current legislation including matters of private, public and tax law, tries to address concepts and suggestions for future legal frameworks and starts to analyse further political implications.

Education

Its aim is to transmit knowledge to the industry regarding the research and development processes involved in DLT/Blockchain-based solutions, through the creation and offer of specialized courses, workshops, conferences and additional learning tools that allow and support companies in their R+D, businesses, operations and legal areas.

The COMET Network

The existing scientific and technological competencies are bundled in the COMET centers located across Austria, thereby sustainably strengthening the competitiveness of Austria as a research location. The COMET network currently consists of 25 COMET Centers, 16 COMET Projects and 12 COMET Modules.

What we do

We are a partly government funded research center that runs a consortium of companies and universities. Together with our partners, we conduct application oriented as well as basic research in many areas related to Blockchain technology.
