Austrian companies face a variety of challenges for which new technologies can provide solutions. The Innovation and Digitalization Department of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO) commissioned the Austrian Blockchain Center to conduct a study examining the practical applications of blockchain technology for businesses.

As part of the study, meaningful blockchain use cases for companies across various industries were analyzed and described using practical examples. The goal is to demonstrate how blockchain can solve concrete business problems and provide decision-makers with a solid basis for targeted and economically sensible adoption of the technology.

Project Contents

The study identified eight blockchain application areas that are highly relevant for Austrian businesses. Blockchain can support different parts of a company, including:

• Production and sales: through more efficient supply chains

• Compliance: through secure data management

• Marketing: through improved customer engagement and loyalty

• Finance: through innovative payment and financing solutions

Each identified application area is based on a specific problem encountered in business practice.

Companies interested in blockchain as a potential solution to their specific challenges should approach the topic strategically while maintaining a practical focus. Introducing blockchain—whether as an internally developed solution or an externally purchased service—requires a systematic approach that includes both an understanding of the technology and its concrete applications.

The study provides practical examples and potential solution providers to help companies implement blockchain projects. It also includes practical checklists outlining the first steps of implementation. The findings therefore offer companies concrete guidance on how to use blockchain in practice and systematically unlock its potential for addressing current economic challenges.
